I’m often asked whether people lose all control during a hypnosis session, and whether they fall asleep.
Two very relevant questions!
For the first one: no, you do not sleep during a hypnosis session. If you were asleep, nothing would happen.
A hypnotic state—or trance—is an altered state of consciousness that allows the imagination to be engaged through therapeutic suggestions tailored to the issue being addressed.
This can change the way we perceive or feel things – whether it’s beliefs, pain, or fears. It’s a state we experience several times a day: like when driving home from work and not remembering exactly what we saw or did, or when we’re lost in thought… or “zoning out.” We are here and elsewhere at the same time
During a hypnosis session, you remain awake and aware. This is reassuring, because you stay in control of yourself. While in a hypnotic state, you can communicate, speak, move, laugh, and even pause the session if you choose. It’s simply a moment that feels good.
And what about manipulation? Again, it’s not possible if you don’t want it. You cannot be made to do something against your will or against your deepest values. If a suggestion conflicts with your personal values, you immediately exit the hypnotic state.
So, rest assured: a therapeutic hypnosis session is a time for you. It’s an approach to change something you want to change. No sleeping, no manipulation: just well-being.
